Should five per cent appear too small, be thankful I don’t take it all
Here is a little gem from the Massachusetts tax code...
Yesterday I had to buy a new battery for my motorcycle. It's been a while since I've had to buy an automotive battery in Massachusetts. Last time I bought a battery was in New Hampshire for my boat which is legally registered in that state. (I want to disclose this before the Massachusetts Department of Revenue sees this post and comes looking for more money.) Before that was likely when I was in my teens and bought one with a friend or for my old Z28.
I remember paying a "fee" even back then when I didn't bring in the old battery. I always just assumed this was something the store did and never looked into this "fee" in my youth. Now, older and more crotchety about the state taking my money, I looked up the "details" around this "fee". The summary is below but if you're looking for the best part scroll down to the bottom.
Summary: The core fee is a sum of money charged on parts that have a "core" that could be reused. It is charged to the manufacturer who passes it along to the distributor who then charges the consumer. If the consumer provides a "core" to return, in theory to the distributor who passes it back to the manufacturer, then the fee is returned. The fee was put in place to encourage reuse of parts rather then disposal, like a deposit.
Here is the tax code gem. The "core" that you purchase in the part you are buying, in my case a battery core, is taxable so you are charged tax on the battery and tax on the core at our newish 6.25% tax rate. Some places charge $25.00 for the core fee so that would be just over a $1.50, mine wasn't that much. Now when you return the old "core" you can get your core fee back but guess what you don't get back, the tax. It appears the purchase of the core is a taxable transaction but the return of the core is not a "return", where you would get the tax back, but a "trade". So imagine how many of these transactions happen per day in Massachusetts, and it's not just batteries. Anything with a reusable part will have a core fee (and it appears some that don't if you search the web). That 6.25% really adds up.
I'm going to see if I can "return" my purchase for a full refund then re-purchase with the core return on the same transaction so I bypass the core fee altogether. I guess I should be happy they don't tax my core fee when I purchase and return the old core1. After all they taxed that money twice already, if you add when I earned it, so is taxing it 3 times really that unbelievable?
1 This was a sarcastic statement, sometimes it hard to express emotion in text. If you agree with it you may not want to keep reading my stuff. Beacon Hill is a bloated bunch of crooks who steal our money via taxes then give it away to people who keep them in power. There are a few good ones down there but on the whole we could easily do without them.
Massachusetts RMV Screws You Again, $5 at a Time!
I just learned of a new "policy" put in place at the Massachusetts' RMV branches, a $5 fee just for going there. That's right, want to go the RMV and do business? Well it's going to cost you $5 dollars more. Beginning March 1st, 2010 there will be a "$5 branch counter fee on licensing and registration transactions" according to the official web site. They call it an "incentive" for people to go online rather then drive to a branch to complete these transactions. I call it bulls**t.
First off, how about a $5 discount for using the online service? That's call an "incentive". Penalizing people for going to a branch is called a "deterrent". We all know that the greedy, grubby hands down at the RMV, DOT, and governor's office wouldn't think of offering to charge less for something. That's just silly. Secondly, you should be giving the poor people who have to go down to a RMV branch $5 just for having to deal with some of the state's worst employees. Most of the people I have dealt with down there are nasty and rude, not to mention they seem put out when you ask them to do their job. There have been some exceptions, but they are by far the exception.
This has to stop. The state just keeps asking for more and more and continues to give less and less. We need to start holding our elected officials accountable for this nonsense. Unfortunately I believe we need to remove them from office. The fact is the elected officials today have a mindset that they can do anything they want and the people of this state will just take it. We need to start sending messages to beacon hill, continue your nonsense and you'll be out of a job.
Next time you vote I hope you remember all the fees and taxes the state charges you and the very little you get in return. I know I will.

Will Any Martha Do For Massachusetts (or is it Massachusettes)?
I recently saw an attack add from Martha Coakley (one of many she runs, since she can't stand on her own phantom accomplishments) that said "This Bush is Brown, this Brown is Bush." In it she panders to the undereducated who don't have the mental capacity to think on their own. You know, those people who shouted "anybody but Bush" during the last presidential election. Boy, don't you wish you were at least shouting "Anybody with a brain and some common sense who loves our country even a little bit and won’t make us the laughingstock of the world, but Bush" now? BTW, nice move there.
Anyway, I thought I'd do an attack ad with the equivalent intellectual prowess the “This Bush is Brown” ad. Here it is:
This Martha is a crook. This crook is a Martha.
Both of these women have robbed people of their personal property. One by lying, cheating, and being downright dishonorable. The other by lying, cheating, and being downright dishonorable. By continuing to support either one you send the message that lying, cheating, and being dishonorable is how you want your country to be. It will continue to corrupt our great country and continue to cost us more. Here is a quick comparison:

|
|
Martha Stewart |
Martha Coakley |
Scott Brown |
|
| Has unrealistic view of the world: | True | True | False |
| Knows nothing about foreign policy: | True | True | False |
| Is unqualified for public office: | True | True | False |
| Has served time in federal prison for a felony: | True | Not Yet | False |
As you can see, neither Martha is right for this state. Make sure on January 19th you don’t pick a Martha.
When I forget to download my podcasts…
Every day before I head out in the morning I pick up my iPod and do a quick download of my favorite podcasts. Buzz out loud is daily, but once in a while I am surprised by a new "The Instance" or "Wicked Good Podcast", who's schedule I still haven't really figured out. Then there are the day I forget.
I head out the door, podcastless, and am forced to turn on the radio. Being a fan of talk radio, I naturally tune into WTKK. The problem, Don Imus is on until 9AM. Once in a blue moon he is talking about something I care to listen to but usually he is saying something that makes me think, "This idiot has a syndicated radio talk show!?!?"
Still, I have discovered something, listening to Imus is like a little punishment for forgetting to download my podcasts. It reminds me to download tomorrow or face another hour of mind numbing Imus dribble. So the next morning I think, "Crap, I better download my podcasts or I'll suffer a bout of Imus." The only thing that saves me is if I am running late Michael Graham comes on just after 9.
