    Washed Technology

washing machineSo it seems I have a trend, if 2 is a trend, of washing technology with my clothes.  This page will document those items which I have washed and their failure or success.

    Leather Wallet

    Leather Wallet

Okay, okay, it’s not tech, however, it is really what started the whole thing.  I had never washed anything accidentally before until my poor wallet went in the wash.  I’m sure this is a fairly common thing for guys, but in case it is not, let me fill you in.  They never come out okay.  How do I know this you ask?  Well, after washing my wallet I bought another one, exactly the same as the one I washed, and (surprise!) I washed that one too!  Verdict: FAIL x 2

    Apple iPod Touch 16gb

    Apple iPod Touch 16gb

So this one is pretty well documented in my landmark blog post “iPods Don’t Float.”  Here is a summary: It went through a full wash cycle.  It did not go through the dryer.  It still works over a year later! Verdict: BIG WIN!

    V-Moda Bass Freq Headphones

These puppies were in the pocket of my pants as they went into the washer.  I’m not sure if they were still in the pocket of the pants after the spin cycle but they did make it into the dryer.  They were found under the pile of clothes as they were folded.  It looked like the cord had been put through the turkish twist, I couldn’t even count the loops.  After spending a few minutes getting the plug unraveled I tried them out.  Verdict?  They appear to be fine.  I thought the left bug sounded a little weak on the bass but I am getting over an ear infection.  The right bug sounded perfect though.  WIN! (so far)

PNY 2GB Attache USB Flash Drive

PNY 2GB Attache USB Flash Drive

Ahh, USB drives. So small, so convenient, so easily slipped into the wash and then into the dryer. That’s right, this little guy made it into the washing machine, survived a full cycle, went with the clothes into the dryer then jumped out and said, “Wow, am I clean.”  It is really clean.  The plastic really looks new, but I wonder how the data is?  Truth be told I wasn’t too upset about the potential loss of this guy.  This is my “rescue” drive, for others, not for myself.  When I get that call, “Next time you are over…my computer is acting funny…”, I slip my little 2GB drive into my pocket loaded with AVG, portable apps, hijack this, malwarebytes, and a free others that will help me rescue a machine from a hostile take over by spyware, malware, and viruses.  2GB now really isn’t enough space for much else (wow, thinking back to my HUGE 128KB memory card for my Atari 800 I can’t believe I just said 2GB is small).  Still, the data, I know you want to know, did it survive?  Well, yes it did and now my drive looks like new, which really isn’t a good thing as my other geek friends may see it and think I wasted money buying a 2GB drive.  So it’s a WIN!
